For general osteoporosis patients, bone loss can be improved through "antiresorptive injections" (Prolia / Denosumab) combined with nutritional supplements and moderate exercise. However, for individuals with severe osteoporosis or those at extremely high risk of fracture, doctors may recommend "bone-building injections" (anabolic agents) as the preferred first-line treatment.

What is the difference between "Antiresorptive Injections" and "Bone-Building Injections"?

  • Antiresorptive Injections: Primarily inhibit osteoclasts, slowing down the rate of bone loss and resorption.

  • Bone-Building Injections: Primarily stimulate the body to produce new bone tissue, improving overall bone quality.

  • New-Generation Bone-Building Injections: Offer a dual action of both "bone-building" and "anti-resorption," helping to enhance bone strength and reduce the risk of future recurrent fractures.

Who is at extremely high risk of fracture? If you meet any of the following criteria, it is recommended to seek an evaluation early and discuss with a doctor whether "bone-building injections" are suitable for you:

-Fractures occurred within the past 24 months; or

-History of multiple fractures; or

-Extremely low bone mineral density (T-score ≤ -3.0); or

-Evaluated by a doctor as being at extremely high risk of fracture.

For individuals who have recently suffered a fracture or have experienced multiple fractures, early evaluation and appropriate treatment are particularly crucial. Doctors will evaluate and determine the most suitable treatment plan based on a combination of factors, including bone density reports, fracture history, age, kidney function, and overall health status.

You can also better understand your bone health through a DEXA bone mineral density scan.
